Events (so far)in 2008 at Glasallt Fawr.

2008 is again proving to be a busy year. We have had the usual parents' weekends,
gone to the annual Coleg Elidyr Summer Fair and held our own Open Day in May.

There have been many outings too, to St Fagan's,Carreg Cennen Castle, Dollaucothi Gold Mines,
The Red Kite Feeding Centre, the theatre, concerts, the cinema, horse-riding and tenpin bowling.
We have gone to local carnivals and shows as well as our regular weekend shopping trips.
We haven't had so many visits to the beach or picnics as usual, as the weather hasn't been very good.
We did manage to go to Pendine beach though. We also plan to go to a pantomime in the New Year.
We have been getting out and about in the local community too and attended some taster sessions
at the local college so that we could enrol on different courses in the autumn term.

Many of us regularly go to the local Church for the Sunday Service as well as having our own religious gatherings.
We have Community Bible Suppers which we bake cakes for. We prepare songs and poems to be shared as well as
readings.
We also go to the local pub regularly.

On the August Bank Holiday The Farmhouse residents went to Aberystwyth and the sun did make an appearance
for a short time. We ate fish and chips and enjoyed doing some shopping. We listened to the street music and
some of us tried our hand at line dancing which we enjoyed. Maggie enjoyed walking on the pier looking at the sea.
On the way back we stopped at Llyn Brianne Dam for a picnic. Joseph particularly enjoyed his walk around the dam
taking in the beautiful scenery.

All the residents from the three houses visited the Gold Mines together in the 17 seater bus.
Roy drove the bus and Joseph particularly enjoyed spending time with him and having his picnic with him.

One of the residents from the Farmhouse has recently been volunteering at Llandovery Luncheon Club practising
her waitressing skills. We will also be volunteering at Many Tears Animal Sanctuary as well as at the
National Botanical Garden of Wales. We are hoping more volunteering programmes can be offered through MENCAP
who arrange work experience opportunities for those who are interested.

We have had to say goodbye to some very special people this year. Sue Young retired in July and we
had a farewell party for her. We welcomed Andrea Bennett as the new Operations Manager and she is
settling in well. Gerald Newton has also left us and is going back to university to
train as a Social Worker. We wished him good luck and had a leaving party for him too.
We are pleased to welcome Heather who has taken over from Gerald. We have also welcomed some
new residents and hope they will be very happy here.

On the 4th September, Hank Hillman came and gave a concert in the hall. He was fantastic and we had a great
sing-along with him. He was so good and everyone enjoyed it so much we have asked him to come back
in December for our Christmas Party.

We shall also be having a Christmas Fair on 6th December when we shall sell some of the items we have made
and make afternoon teas.

Events in 2007 at Glasallt Fawr.

2007 was a busy year at Glasallt Fawr.
There were parents' weekends, the annual Coleg Elidyr Advent Fair in Llangadog and their Summer Fair.
The parents' weekend are always a good chance to get together and discuss ideas and future plans.

There wew many outings too, to places like St Fagan's, Gelli Aur, the
theatre, beaches and Swansea Air Show. We went to concerts, the cinema, horse-riding and tenpin bowling
as well as our weekend shopping trips. The shopping trips involved visiting Brecon, Carmarthen,
Swansea and Cardiff as well as our small local towns and sometimes we went by train.

We took part in a local Church service some weekends as an extension to
our own religious gatherings. Last year we attended a Carol Service in Brecon Cathedral.
We had great excitement in June when Guido and Birgit got married and invited us all to their wedding.

Some of us went on Youth Hostelling holidays to Leominster and Ironbridge and visited some
of the local museums and places of interest near there. The trips were a great success.
We also visited some of the parents at home.

In July we were inspected by CSSIW and were given a very good report. Click Inspection Report to view the report.

We attended the Church Christmas Concert and carol services and went
to the pantomime in Swansea
