Events in 2008 at Glasallt Fawr.

2008 was another busy year. We have had the usual parents' weekends, gone to the annual
Coleg Elidyr Summer Fair and held our own Open Day in May and Advent Fair in December.

From June to November we were inspected by CSSIW again and were given another very good report.
Click Inspection Report to view the report.

In July we were also assessed for the Investors in People Award which has since been awarded.
We were also assessed for the very prestigious Leadership and Management award.
There are very few companies who achieve this award but again it was awarded to us.
Well done everybody.

There have been many outings too, to St Fagan's,Carreg Cennen Castle, Dollaucothi Gold Mines,
The Red Kite Feeding Centre, the theatre, concerts, the cinema, horse-riding and tenpin bowling.
We have gone to local carnivals and shows as well as our regular weekend shopping trips.
We haven't had so many visits to the beach or picnics as usual, as the weather hasn't been very good.
We did manage to go to Pendine beach though. We also plan to go to a pantomime in the New Year.
We have been getting out and about in the local community too and attended some taster sessions
at the local college so that we could enrol on different courses in the autumn term.
Many of us regularly go to the local Church for the Sunday Service as well as having our own religious
gatherings. We have Community Bible Suppers which we bake cakes for. We prepare songs and poems
to be shared as well as readings.
We also go to the local pub regularly.

On the August Bank Holiday The Farmhouse residents went to Aberystwyth and the sun did make an
appearance for a short time. We ate fish and chips and enjoyed doing some shopping. We listened
to the street music and some of us tried our hand at line dancing which we enjoyed.
Maggie enjoyed walking on the pier looking at the sea.
On the way back we stopped at Llyn Brianne Dam for a picnic. Joseph particularly enjoyed his walk
around the dam taking in the beautiful scenery.

All the residents from the three houses visited the Gold Mines together in the 17 seater bus.
Roy drove the bus and Joseph particularly enjoyed spending time with him and having his picnic with him.

One of the residents from the Farmhouse has recently been volunteering at Llandovery Luncheon Club
practising her waitressing skills. We will also be volunteering at Many Tears Animal Sanctuary
as well as at the National Botanical Garden of Wales. We are hoping more volunteering programmes
can be offered through MENCAP who arrange work experience opportunities for those who are interested.

We have had to say goodbye to some very special people this year. Sue Young retired in July and we
had a farewell party for her. We welcomed Andrea Bennett as the new Operations Manager and she is
settling in well. Gerald Newton has also left us to further his career. We wished him good luck
and had a leaving party for him too. We are pleased to welcome Heather who has taken over from Gerald.
We have also welcomed some new residents and hope they will be very happy here.

On the 4th September, Hank Hillman came and gave a concert in the hall. He was fantastic and we
had a great sing-along with him. He was so good and everyone enjoyed it so much we have asked him
to come back in December for our Christmas Party.

The Advent Fair was a great success. We made Christmas decorations, candles, wreaths and
table decorations before the Fair which was on 6th December. We also sold mulled wine and teas.
The money we made has been used for gardening equipment, arts and crafts materials and
weavery materials and towards pantomime tickets.
