Events in 2009 at Glasallt Fawr.
It has been another busy year at Glasallt Fawr with new residents and staff arriving. By the end of
August there will be 20 residents at Glasallt which means we still have a few vacancies.
We were inspected by CSSIW in the summer and received another very good report.

We have had some eventful parents weekends. The June weekend saw us all busy with the Summer
Fair. It was a lovely sunny day and we had many stalls and games and an excellent raffle.
It was a very enjoyable fund-raising afternoon. In the evening we had a barbecue and then the
amazing Bongo Clive entertained everyone and had us singing, dancing and playing instruments.
It was great fun for everybody.
Another fund-raising event was held at Fonmon Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan. This was organised
by parents and was an amazing event. It was a summer tea, but probably the best tea you could
ever imagine! It was held in a marquee attached to Fonmon Castle and was a beautiful setting.
Because of the dreadful weather, we all had to be in the marquee or the castle itself,
which was a pity as the gardens at Fonmon are lovely. There were hundreds of people there
and the parents raised a substantial amount of money.
Thank you to all who made this event possible.
Most of the residents have been away over the summer to spend some time with their parents.
Many of them had attended college courses and received their certificates at the end of
the summer term. One resident had a work placement for a few weeks and some have been helping
at a local Lunch Club and also at a local dogs home taking the dogs for walks.
Our volunteers have been busy over the past year producing newsletters for parents which they
have done in their own time. These have been beautifully produced and very popular with everyone
who has received them. We now have some new volunteers and hope they will continue to produce a
newsletter periodically.
At the parents weekend in September a Barbecue was arranged fopr the Saturday night and
there was a Barn Dance afterwards. It was a great success and led to the fiddler, Helen Adam,
coming to Glasallt to take music and drama workshops. We will see the results of the workshops
in the Spring at another parents' weekend.
The kitchen in Noddfa Ioan has been completely refurbished. This was a huge task but well worth the
effort as it now looks wonderful. Some of the bedrooms in Noddfa Ioan were also plastered and decorated.
In the Farmhouse, the upstairs kitchen was converted into a bedroom for one of the new residents. It too
looks very comfortable. All this hard work was largely carried out or overseen by Guido. It was quite
stressful for him at times but the results are excellent. Thanks Guido.
Guido's right hand man, Roy, retired in the Autumn. He had been at Glasallt Fawr for many, many years
and will be missed by everyone. Enjoy your retirement Roy!
There were visits to Oakwood and St Fagan's in the Autumn as well as other visits.
In November we had an Advent Fair with lots of stalls organised by parents, residents and staff.
It was good to see so many visitors at this busy time of year. On the Sunday we had our
Advent Garden which again was a very moving experience. Many parents stayed for this and I am sure
they were glad to have shared this celebration.
On the 18th December before residents started to go home for the holidays, we had our Christmas lunch
in the Community Centre. The Christmas trees were beautifully decorated and in the evening Bongo Clive
came to entertain everyone. A local choir also came to entertain us in Christmas week.
And so 2009 draws to an end and we can look forward to another happy and busy year in 2010.
